Was The Race(r) Fixed?
Warner Bros. on Monday was being accused of cooking the books Monday after it turned out that their box-office estimate for the opening weekend of Speed Racer was way off the mark. The studio had predicted that the film would wind up with $20.2 million in ticket sales, putting it in second place. "It's far from the first time a studio with an underperforming pic has overestimated its Sunday gross and avoided an embarrassing third-place finish in Monday morning box office stories," Daily Variety commented today (Tuesday). The estimated figure, not the final one, is the one that receives the most play in the press -- if for no other reason than that Sunday is ordinarily a light news day. Few analysts had believed the studio's estimate, given the movie's weak showing on Friday and Saturday. (Weekend estimates include actual figures for Friday and Saturday and estimated sales for Sunday.) As things turned out, the movie debuted with just $18.6 million -- a figure that will no doubt cause heads eventually to fall at the studio, which reportedly spent $250-300 million to produce and market it. Quelle: moviehole.netSince Larry and Andy never do press, have they started thinking about 3-D filmmaking?
Silver: Yeah, we talked about this being 3-D. We actually discussed this being 3-D. There aren't enough theatres yet right now to make it really...it would have taxed us to make this 3-D right now. But maybe if we make a sequel, I mean, they have a story for a sequel and if they make it...
Question: What is it? Any hints on where it might go?
Silver: Well, there's things they want to do with him. There's as many episodes of this cartoon so there's a lot of ideas, but if we make the sequel maybe that will be in 3-D, but I mean it would have been possible because it was digital to begin with to do it in 3-D and all those shots were rendered so it would have been possible.
Question: Do you think they want to do a sequel or do you think they want to take on another property?
Silver: Well, I mean, I don't know if they will direct the sequel. Maybe somebody else will--maybe they will, I don't know. This was pretty tough this one to do, but to create this you know, but I don't know if they'd want to give that to somebody else, I don't know.
Ich denk auch, auf DVD wird der besser laufen. Wer setzt sich denn im Kino freiwillig in nen Kiddiefilm? Also abgesehen vom freeman? ;)
Glaub aber schon, alleine die Neugierde ist groß genug, dass der sich auf DVD absetzen lässt - und eben alleine wegen der erwähnten zu erwartenden Bild- und Tonreferenz.
