Quelle: moviehole.netFilmmaker mink, attached to direct the third installment - or is it a reboot? - of the "Mortal Kombat" movie series, dropped by the compound today to answer questions about the video-game cum film.
The status of the film, as of today, is that "...the Producers are working out their deals with the studio and arranging their financing", says the director, who helmed Steven Seagal's "Into the Sun".
mink says the project isn't so much a sequel as it is a "re-envisioning(if that is a word) of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom. Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film. It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, photography and most importantly the fighting scenes. The original Mortal Kombat game was born a child of many visual loves by the creators at midway so this latest version borrows heavily from that pioneering spirit and must be thought out and executed at the highest level in order for it succeed in today's market place. This is no overnight task.''
Though the IMDB has Christopher Lambert returning as Rayden, mink says casting hasn't begun yet.
"First things first, is the way these larger projects need to be done. It is still in the business stages but once that is squared away all casting options will be explored along with the continued development of the best story line."
The last we heard the film was supposed to be shot in Louisiana.
''At one point Louisiana was on the table for various reasons. It still maybe in the future if that is appropriate place to work for the picture''.
Though Drew McWeeny and Scott Swan wrote the original draft of the script, "the writing has been handled by the Producers and their writers at Threshold Studios in conjunction with Midway, of course.

Quelle: moviehole.net"Mortal Kombat is still in the money stage", says the filmmaker. "As I have said in the past inquires independent films need to be financed before you start making money based creative decisions and as you may have noticed the economy in general is a little sluggish at the moment especially in Hollywood. Indy investors are more cautious at this particular time then recently so it takes longer than ever. MK more than likely will be an Indy film. The film's projected budget will be between 50& 60 mill so it is a bit more tricky than just running down to the ATM or writing a cashiers check(maybe one of those Jumbo checks like Publisher Clearing House winners). Currently Threshold is working out the financing through a studio and or equity situation. This will take as long as needs to take. I know the frustration this causes the awesome MK fans but that's the fact Jack...."
mink, whose other credits include the Steven Seagal vehicle "Into the Sun", says he's spoken to some of the original cast members from the previous two films about possibly reprising their roles - but hasn't committed to anyone.
"In regards to the casting, the director traditionally has a say in any ideas and suggests who she or he feels is best. But again in this situation MK3 is a work for hire under Threshold (who are the creatives on most of the non MK game products)and they have final say along with Midway as far as the cast goes. So they will make that call. In regards to the past cast they and myself have met with a lot of the previous cast and they are all in the mix but as the money must come first so casting is a still a few steps away. So for now efforts are best spent on the non money creative for someone like myself in regards to visual style, locations, photography style and concept art ideas. So while we wait for the green light as they say I am prepping and developing my movie 13 Chambers with Lawrence Bender Productions."
Quelle: Variety.comWarner Bros. has been sued by Threshold Entertainment for alleged breach of contract over development of a third "Mortal Kombat" movie.
The suit was filed Tuesday in state court in Los Angeles, accusing Warners of "failing to cooperate and respond to Threshold and seeking to cut out Threshold."
Reps for Warner Bros. had no comment.
It's the third "Kombat" suit filed by Threshold over "Mortal Kombat," according to Threshold attorney Peter C. Bierne. The first two actions were filed in 2008 and 2009 against Warner and subsidiary New Line over accounting from the first "Mortal Kombat" film, released in 1995.
The latest suit asserts that Threshold has a property ownership of a third "Kombat" pic, due to agreements it made with Midway Games.
Warner Bros. picked up most of Midway Games' assets in bankruptcy court last year for the fire-sale price of $33 million, giving the studio rights to "Mortal Kombat," "Spy Hunter," "Joust" and several other game franchises.

Warner Premiere's 'Mortal Kombat' Tourney Goes Websides!
Friday, January 14, 2011, Bloody Disgusting
So much for the proposed Mortal Kombat remake that Warner Bros. Pictures had hoped to get off the ground. Still, fans of the bloody battle are in for a treat as Bloody Disgusting learned that director Kevin Tancharoen - who directed the awesome online short - will return behind the camera for a 10-episode web series dedicated to the popular video game. Penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing, star Michael Jai White leads the cast as "Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs. Shooting will take place in Vancouver this coming February. Contested expected to be cast are: Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and of course Scorpion. No release date is planned, and there's no word on that R-rated remake. The only plot details we could conjure up is that a few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect.
