Hellraiser Reboot (Hulu)

Beitrag von SFI » 08.10.2007, 05:27

Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury will direct the upcoming "Hellraiser" remake (wasn’t that dead a few weeks back?).
Apparently the brothers - they did that flick "Inside" - will be nutting out a screenplay based on a 40-page treatment that Pinhead pop Clive Barker penned.

Interview mit den Regisseuren:
BLAKE: So your doing "Hellraiser" next?
JULIEN MAURY: Maybe.
ALEXANDRE BUSTILLO: We are actually writing the script right now and we don’t want to remake exactly the Cliver Barker movie. We have met Clive and told him what we want to do with "Hellraiser" and he said, "It’s f**king good do it!" We are happy to have his benediction. It will not be a remake. It will still be called "Hellraiser" and it will have a new Pinhead.
JULIEN MAURY: It’s more of an adaptation.
ALEXANDRE BUSTILLO: With our vision we want to be very fair to the cinephile fans of "Hellraiser." We want to make something very different and something new with it.
JULIEN MAURY: Clive is 100% behind us and that makes us really assured.
ALEXANDRE BUSTILLO: It will be very different. It won’t be like the original "Hellraiser" or that series of movies. We are big fans of the original but we don’t want to do it as a remake since that would be complete nonsense to do [or approach] it that way. Our story is very very different I promise! It will be cool!

writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton have recently signed a deal with The Weinstein Company to pen the upcoming Hellraiser remake.
Dunstan and Melton cut their teeth on the Hollywood horror scene thanks to the DVD success of Feast, a creature feature distributed by Dimension. Since then they have penned Lionsgate's $125 million worldwide-grossing Saw IV and this year's Saw V.
Dunstan is currently in principal photography on Dimension's Midnight Man based on a script he co-penned with Melton.
The Weinstein brothers recently set a release date of January 9, 2009 for Hellraiser after it was evident directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury were never going to make the initial (unrealistic) September bow.

Pascal Laugier, whose horror film "Martyrs" stirred controversy in his native France, is in final negotiations to write and direct Dimension's re-imagining of "Hellraiser," one of horrormeister Clive Barker's best-known creations.
Released in 1987, "Hellraiser" told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. The movie introduced viewers to a race of demons called Cenobites, most notably one nicknamed Pinhead -- who became one of the most enduring horror characters of the decade -- who was summoned using an antique puzzle box.
Dimension has been hoping to relaunch the franchise for the past couple of years, first hiring Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo to write and direct a remake then tapping Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton to write a new draft.
ICM-repped Laugier at least seems to have thematic sympathies with the material, with his "Martyrs" beginning as a revenge movie then entering the grounds of spiritual horror, with torture figuring as a focal point. Torture -- though not the so-called horror subgenre of torture porn -- also is a key point in "Hellraiser."
"This is a dream project for me," Laugier said. "I know Clive Barker's work very well, and I would never betray what he has done. Fans are expecting a definitive 'Hellraiser,' and I don't want to take that away from them."
"Martyrs" has been dividing audiences since appearing at the Festival de Cannes because of its unrelenting violent nature. The movie was hit with a 18+ rating -- a rarity in France and an equivalent of NC-17 in the U.S. -- sparking a protest by the country's Society of Film Directors.
At the Toronto International Film Festival, several people reportedly fainted during its midnight screenings. The Weinstein Co. is the domestic distributor, but no dates have been announced.
The remake is part of Dimension chief Bob Weinstein's master plan.
"If I could make all my films from franchises, I would," the Weinstein Co. co-chairman said at the recent Media and Money conference in New York. At the event, presented by Dow Jones and the Nielsen Co., parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, he rattled off a list of other films that he hopes to continue sequelizing, including "Scream" and "Scary Movie."

While Pinhead and the Hellraiser films haven't exactly been hitting the horror home run that they should over the last few years, it seems that the only place you can find a good Cenobite-laden tale is in print.

And that's just fine with us because when you see what Clive Barker and BOOM! Studios have in store for fans, you're going to find yourself coming way before anyone even opens your box.

In case you haven't been in the know, BOOM! Studios is launching a new ongoing Hellraiser comic book series written by Clive Barker that will be released in comic stores everywhere on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011. This is only the third time that Clive has "touched" the characters — the first with his novella The Hellbound Heart and the second being the first Hellraiser film. With the Hellraiser ongoing comic series, Clive Barker returns to his signature creation.

Some quick details for you ...
# Hellraiser: Prelude is a complete, self-contained original eight-page Hellraiser story.
# The story takes place before Issue #1 of the new Hellraiser ongoing comic, written by Clive Barker and drawn by Leonardo Manco.
# This IS NOT a preview of anything from the first issue. This is all new, all original content.
# There is no way to get this content outside of the PDF provided here. It will not be put into print until the TPB collection.

Excited? Yeah, you should be. This is the first time any publisher has ever done this, much less with one of the biggest names in literature and one of the biggest franchise characters in fiction.

Hellraiser Remake Is Stalling Again
Source: Shock Till You Drop, September 7, 2011

The sweet suffering that only Pinhead and his fellow cenobites can dish out may not be felt on the big screen right away.

Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry), the duo attached to revive Hellraiser on the big screen for Dimension Films, attending the Los Angeles signing event for Still Screaming last night. And when pressed for details about their Hellraiser remake, both were telling fans that it was looking unlikely that it was going to happen with them involved. This update comes after Farmer and Lussier drafted a number of scripts that presented different takes on the latest Pinhead outing.

So, this means Hellraiser is, once again, on hold until Dimension sorts out what it wants to do with the series creatively.

A direct-to-DVD sequel Hellraiser: Revelations is arriving this fall - a production that was reportedly cranked out just so the studio could hold on to the rights. And it appears they were smart in buying themselves time to develop the property longer.

Shock Till You Drop has exclusively received a series of Cenobite conceptual designs that were created for Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer's Hellraiser remake. These were created by FX vet Gary J. Tunnicliffe of Two Hours in the Dark.

As you can see, they maintained some similarity to the original Pinhead design, but encased it in a rather phallic collar. He was going to be joined by another male Cenobite known as "Skinner" and a female Cenobite. Of course, because the remake lost steam at Dimension this week, these will never come to fruition.

Clive Barker to Draft Hellraiser Reboot
Source: Clive Barker , ShockTillYouDrop.com, October 24, 2013

A remake of Clive Barker's horror classic Hellraiser is back on track and fans should be pleased to learn that it is being developed by Barker himself. What's more, Doug Bradley will be back as Pinhead! The official announcement was posted to the filmmaker's Facebook page (via ShockTillYouDrop) and reads as follows:

HOT FROM HELL! My friends,I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Pictures,in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first HELLRAISER film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity-honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film-was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch.

What can I tell you about it?

Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed. So once the papers are signed, I will open a Lemarchand Configuration, dip my quill in its contents and start writing. I promise that there will be nowhere on the Internet where the news of my progress will be more reliable than here ,because the only author of these reports will be Your Infernal Corespondent ,me.

My very best wishes to you all,my friends. Clive.

In a recent interview with EW, Barker offered an update on Hellraiser. Here’s an excerpt from this article:

In fact, these days, Barker is very much back in the Pinhead business. The writer reveals he recently sent Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein the second draft of his screenplay for a new Hellraiser movie, which Barker describes as a “very loose” remake of his original film.

“I think the phrase is ‘reboot,’ although I’ve never really understood what that meant,” he says. “I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy—the Frenchman Lemarchand—who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, ‘Well, what would have happened to him?’ He might well have been taken to Devil’s Island and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie. We’re waiting for Bob to come back to us and see when we’re going to actually make the movie.”

If you’re not familiar with Devil’s Island, it was a penal colony – a prison that operated from the mid-1800s to 1953. As we know, Lemarchand was a character who played a major part in Hellraiser: Bloodline, the fourth installment in the series.

Hier mal so einige Infos dazu von Bloody-Disgusting.com:
David Bruckner (The Night House), who helmed Netflix’s The Ritual as well as sections of Bloody Disgusting’s horror anthologies V/H/S and Southbound, is directing the relaunch of the Hellraiser franchise for Spyglass Media, set to be a Hulu feature film written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (SiREN, Super Dark Times, The Night House).

That film has now been fully detailed by an official Hulu press release this afternoon, announcing that “Sense8” actress Jamie Clayton is playing Pinhead in the new movie!

The project is being described as a “loyal, yet evolved re-imagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic,” and we’ve additionally learned that Clive Barker is on board as a producer.

“Original creator Barker, alongside Marc Toberoff, come aboard as producers, joining Phantom Four’s David S. Goyer and Keith Levine. As previously announced, David Bruckner (“The Night House”, “The Ritual,”) is directing from a screenplay by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (“The Night House,” “Super Dark Times”) with story by Goyer.”

Bruckner said, “It’s been such an honor to have Clive onboard to help support and shepherd us through the incredible universe he created so long ago. Combined with a fearless and committed cast, including the amazing Jamie Clayton, who fully embodies the role as the Hell Priest, we’re aiming to create a very special new chapter in the ‘Hellraiser’ legacy.”

Goyer said, “From the moment I first read ‘The Hellbound Heart,’ Clive Barker became one of my literary heroes. His work is transgressive and completely redefined the horror genre. Under the guiding hand of David Bruckner, we’re going back to the source and taking our inspiration from that original novella.”

Barker said, “Having seen some of the designs from David Bruckner’s new ‘Hellraiser’ film, they pay homage to what the first film created, but then take it to places it’s never been before. This is a ‘Hellraiser’ on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honour the original even as they revolutionize it for a new generation.”

Odessa A’zion (“Grand Army,” “Mark, Mary, & Some Other People,”) will also star, alongside Brandon Flynn (“13 Reasons Why,” “Ratched,”), Goran Visnjic (“The Boys,” “ER,”), Drew Starkey (“Outer Banks,” “Love, Simon,”), Adam Faison (“Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” “Into the Dark”), Aoife Hinds (“Normal People,” “Anne Boleyn,”), and Hiam Abbass (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Succession.”).

Principal photography has wrapped on the production.

Doug Bradley u.a. zu Jamie Clayton als Pinhead sowie zum Chatterer...
“It seemed like [a female Pinhead] was coming. It’s an interesting piece of casting,” Bradley says. “I don’t know Jamie. Of course, they’ve taken even a little bit of a wrinkle in that, because Jamie is transgender. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there was a science fiction series on Netflix several years ago called Sense8, which I was quite a fan of. Jamie was in that, and I really, really liked her performance in that.”

“I really can’t say more than that. I do like to point out that I did wear a skirt as Pinhead,” he adds with a chuckle. “It’s an interesting casting decision. Well, that only goes so far. We say ‘female Pinhead’ like we know what that means, but there are a million shades of femininity. Where exactly are they going to go with that?”

Bradley continues, “Everything about Hellraiser has always been transgressive. Everything, always, from start to finish. It’s not a new idea in that sense, but I’m intrigued. I’m in the same position as all the rest of you, I guess, to see where that goes.”

Bradley goes on to confirm that Chatterer will be among the Cenobites appearing in the new film. “I was at Monsterpalooza, a convention in Pasadena, a couple months ago, and I met the guy who’s playing the new Chatterer. He’s like 6’9″ and a beanpole, so they’re going in lots of different directions. It’s another interesting casting idea. Cenobites of all shapes and sizes!”

Ultimately, he emphasizes that the story is of paramount importance. “The thing that will make the movie work or not is none of that. It’s the story. If the story is strong, the movie will work. That’s why Hellraiser has succeeded; not because the Cenobites are gloriously fucked up and so is Julia, which they all are. All of those elements are magnificent in the film, and Chris Young’s score is one of the best ever written. All of that is true, but the story is what makes Hellraiser work, so we’ll see what happens.”
