The new show will serve as a prequel to the main series, taking place thousands of years before the events which we've been watching unfold since 2011. Jane Goldman (KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE) will serve as showrunner on the new series, and also co-created and co-wrote the project alongside George R.R. Martin. The series will chronicle "the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know." Although part of me wishes that Game of Thrones would be left alone following its hopefully epic conclusion next year, it's hard to deny that the mythology of Westeros has so much more to offer.

We talk about the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros; there were Seven Kingdoms at the time of Aegon’s Conquest,” Martin said. “But if you go back further then there are nine kingdoms, and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms — petty kingdoms — and that’s the era we’re talking about here.”

“As you know for Game of Thrones, we never even nominated anybody for lead actress or lead actor [during awards season] until recently; it was always for supporting [categories] because the show is such an ensemble. I think that will be true for this show too. We don’t have leads so much as a large ensemble cast.”
