Bruce Campbell to Headline Evil Dead TV Series

It was revealed during the Screen Gems panel on Friday that Sam Raimi, his brother and Bruce Campbell are working on an Evil Dead television series. Tonight, Campbell posted a quick update on Twitter that offers some very welcome news to Evil Dead fans: Ash will be the star of the series.
It's currently unclear whether or not this series is targeted to replace Raimi's previously announced plans for a big screen Army of Darkness sequel, but check back for updates as soon as they become available.

Die Fernsehwelt hatte nur noch wenige Ideen und schob TV-Versionen etwas älterer Filme an. Da schrie Sam Raimi: "Wartet, ich habe noch weniger Ideen und mache eine TV-Serie aus einem etwas älteren Film, den ich gerade noch habe remaken lassen."
Das kann doch fast nur Murks werden, mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass das Original (und wohl auch das von mir noch nicht gesehene Remake) eindeutig in die harte Horror- und Splatterecke fallen - da kann er es ja nur nem Pay-TV- oder Kabelsender anbieten oder alles Charakterisierende seines Originals aufgeben, wenn er das Ganze an ein Network gibt.

Ich finde da ausnahmsweise schon, dass das Potenzial hat. Gerade weil die Filme mit so vielen verschiedenen Stimmungen arbeiten (von grimmigem Horror bis zur Slapstick-Komödie), kann man da eigentlich viel rausholen und vor allem auch nette Special-Episoden zaubern, zB. eine komplett in Claymation realisiert oder so.
Ist natürlich die Frage, ob da dann auch wirklich was draus gemacht wird und vor allem eben auch, ob das Publikum da mitspielt. Das ist für mich die eigentliche Frage, denn garstiges, schräges Horrorzeugs gibt's in Serienform noch nicht so viel, da darf durchaus gerne mal was geliefert werden. Ob nun Evil Dead drübersteht oder nicht.

Die Frage bliebe jedoch, wieviel man aus dem zeitlich und räumlich beschränkten "Evil Dead"-Konstrukt machen soll, wenn es nun über mehrere Serienfolgen geht. Oder man entfernt sich so weit von der Vorlage, dass man irgendwann die Frage stellen muss, warum das Ganze noch "Evil Deda" heißt.

Ich persönlich würde die Serie eben absichtlich sehr handlungsfrei anlegen, mit sehr schrillen Episoden mal ohne zusammenhängende Handlung, gerne auch von verschiedenen Regisseuren pro Folge wie eine Anthologie umgesetzt. Gar nicht erst auf der ohnehin nicht sehr ergiebigen Story rumreiten, sondern lieber die Kleinigkeiten verfolgen, Details zu kleinen Bild-Ton-Kunstwerken aufbauschen. Denn davon lebt ja auch die Original-Trilogie.
Aber wie gesagt - ob das tatsächlich jemand so umsetzen würde und ob sich dann dafür auch noch ein Publikum finden würde, das ist wieder eine ganz andere Frage.

News has hit today that Starz has ordered up 10 episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead. And get this: Bruce Campbell is reprising his role as Ash!
Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.
“Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it,” saidSam Raimi.
Raimi, Tapert and Campbell will executive produce and Raimi will direct the first episode.

Starz has announced today that Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) will play the role of Ruby in the network’s upcoming original series “Ash vs Evil Dead.” ... Ruby is a mysterious figure who is myopic in her quest to hunt down the source of the recent Evil outbreaks. The only problem: she believes that Ash (Bruce Campbell) is the cause of it all.

One of the first ever images from “Ash vs Evil Dead,” the upcoming Starz series based on Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise, revealed Bruce Campbell as Ash, alongside Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana Delorenzo).
What was weird about the image was that it was pegged as a look at Ash with his two fellow Value Stop employees.
“Value Stop? What about S-Mart?” we collectively asked.
S-Mart was one of the most memorable locations in the Evil Dead franchise as it was the starting and ending point to Army of Darkness, where Ash gets his trusty “boomstick” and other handy tools.
During an interview we had with Raimi back in July, he explains the name change to Bloody Disgusting.
“Because of some licensing issues we no longer have the rights to use the name ‘S-Mart,’ and the same goes along for anything that came out of ‘Army of Darkness’,” Sam told us. “I’m not sure exactly who owns the rights, but we’ve made sure… even gone out of our way… to make sure that will not inhibit the fans’ enjoyment of the show.”
As many of you may recall, there was some insane legal issues when an Army of Darkness sequel was announced without Raimi’s involvement. There’s been no clarity on what’s actually going on, but it sounds as if that part of the Ash universe will be completely ignored.
In fact, when we talked to producer Robert Tapert back in April, he eluded to this…
“’Army of Darkness’ doesn’t exist,” says Tapert before clarifying a bit. “Well, certainly Ash went through a bad experience, but we’re not really referencing it [on the show], specifics from that, but he certainly has that in his memory.”
