On Warner Bros. Discovery’s first-quarter earnings conference call on Thursday, CEO David Zaslav said that the company is “now in the early stages of script development” for new Lord of the Rings movies, which he says they “anticipate releasing in 2026” and will “explore storylines yet to be told.”

Zaslav says that director Peter Jackson and his longtime writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens “will be involved every step of the way.”

It’s unclear if the fan-made film helped inspire WB’s project. But one suspects that the popularity of the video game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was released last year, was at least part of the project’s inspiration.

David Zaslav ist eh die schlimmste Inkarnation eines menschgewordenen Rechenschiebers, dem der Content seiner Produkte vollkommen am Arsch vorbeigeht. Stolzer Erfinder von "Abschreiben durch Nichtveröffentlichung" und ähnlicher Praktiken, was ja bei Disney & Co. schnell Schule machte. Dass er gegen den Fanfilm vorgeht, passt da nur ins Bild.

“I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films!” Boyens said. “That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being The Hunt For Gollum, the second one still to be confirmed.”
