“Barbarian” filmmaker Zach Cregger is attached to write and direct a new film reboot of the “Resident Evil” video game franchise.

His boarding the project has reportedly started an intense bidding war for the property with four studios vying for the project – including Warner Bros. Pictures and Netflix.

Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben tells Deadline that the new film is “far away from everything that is connected to Resident Evil, only because Zach Cregger has his own style.”

When it came to entrusting Resident Evil with a new voice, Berben admits it was a no-brainer to give Cregger “carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to do with that IP.”

He adds, “With Resident Evil, we have had an incredible journey with one of the most successful international IPs of more than a billion dollars in box office for many years, and now we are creating something new — not just a new story idea, but to allow a new generation to take the IP into their own hands and form something different.”

These statements echo previous comments made by Cregger, who remarked, “I consider Resident Evil an original thing, and I think you will too when you see it.”

The filmmaker also stated, “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games. I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”

Zach Cregger has been pretty clear in recent months that his upcoming Resident Evil movie isn’t a direct adaptation of any of the video games, but rather his own original story that aims to recapture the experience of playing a Resident Evil video game. That said, Cregger has revealed that in his mind, his movie is taking place during the events of Resident Evil 2.

The Resident Evil 2 video game, to be clear.

Zach Cregger explains to IGN in a trailer breakdown video today, “My rule for this movie was to try and make a movie that felt like my experience of playing the games, and that could live in the world of Resident Evil. I feel like this movie takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2. I like to think that everything that’s going on in the police station could be happening in this world. This is just another dude on another mission on the other side of town.”

“So yeah,” Cregger continues, “it’s not canon in that I’m using the characters, but it’s canon in that it lives in the actual day of reckoning in Raccoon City.”

“This is the first night that the T-Virus has broken out,” Cregger adds.

Der Trailer sieht recht gut, aber gar nicht nach Resident Evil aus. Habe aber das IGN-Interview mit dem Regisseur gesehen und fand es auch als Fan der Games recht gut, was er zu sagen hatte. Hoffe aber doch auf einige Verweise auf Umbrella oder Police Chief Irons.
